History
.
In the early 1900's Joseph Hill immigrated from Russia with only a trade under his belt and that was Glass and Mirrors. He became one of the founders of the glaziers union in New York City. He was a charter member and the eleventh name on the charter.
| Joseph Hill had a son, Larry Hill who followed in his footsteps and became a glazier. In that time the early 1940's it was impossible to become a member of the
N.Y.C. glazier union. Larry Hill had to join the Brooklyn glaziers union in order to start his career in the mirror and glass business. |
|
| Eventually after many years both unions merged and became one, that was known as Glaziers Union 1087. In those early days there was one exciting day in each month, that was the union meeting at the fourth street union hall. Every meeting was full of chairs being thrown and fist fights, in those days everybody was literally fighting for a better life. In the early 1950's during a union meeting Joseph Hill left the meeting for a breath of air collapsed on the steps of the union hall and passed away from a heart attack. |
|

|
Larry Hill took off where Joseph Hill left off and created the first
N.Y.C. certified by the Board of Education apprentice-training program. It was a program that one had to attend four years in a row to earn a Journey Man's Card or
Mechanics Card.
|
| Larry Hill had a son
named Joe Hill who followed in his grandfathers
and fathers footsteps. He joined the glaziers apprenticeship
program in 1973. He worked in all phases of the
business, working for some of the biggest companies
in the U.S. mostly as Foreman or Charge positions.
In the late 1980's the market had its crash and
construction came to a halt. Joe found that he could
not support his family on one or two days of work
a week and unemployment. He purchased a van and
started Mirrors Mirrors which eventually became
known as A WORLD OF MIRRORS AND GLASS and THE SHOWER
DOOR. |
